Hwang In-beom. Oh Hyeon-gyu. Korea 2-1 Czechia. Just Like That, Everyone’s Watching.

Korea Came Back From Behind to Beat Czechia 2-1. And Just Like That, Everyone’s Watching Again.

As a Korean watching this unfold — I’ll be honest.

Before the match kicked off at 11:00 AM Korean time, the mood wasn’t exactly electric. People were tired. The time zone was still awkward for a weekday morning. Some fans were watching from their offices on their phones.

And then Czechia scored first. 59th minute. A header from captain Ladislav Krejci off a long throw-in. 0-1.

Here we go again, everyone thought.

And then Korea woke up.

What Actually Happened

The match was played in Zapopan, Mexico. After a lacklustre first half in which both teams were jeered as they left the field, Czechia took the lead in the 59th minute. H2news

But Korea responded fast.

Czech Republic’s lead only lasted eight minutes. Hwang In-beom drew South Korea level when he cut inside from Kang-in Lee’s pass and clipped a deft finish inside the post. Hyundai Motor Group

Then came the winner.

Oh Hyeon-gyu scored the decisive goal in the 80th minute — a clinical finish after Hwang In-beom’s cross from the right flank. Final score: Korea 2 — Czechia 1. ⚽⚽ Bloter

The Numbers Behind the Win

Korea dominated possession at 55% and attempted 15 shots on goal compared to Czechia’s 7, with 6 on target. This wasn’t a lucky win. Korea were the better team. Bloter

Hwang In-beom became only the third South Korean player to record a goal and an assist in a FIFA World Cup match — after Choi Soon-ho against Italy in 1986 and Hong Myung-bo against Spain in 1994. Hong Myung-bo scored a famous free-kick goal against Spain in that 1994 match — and is now the head coach of this very team. Full circle. Investchosun

What the Coach Said

Head coach Hong Myung-bo praised his side’s mentality after the match: “It was our first game and a very difficult one. The win itself makes me happy, but what’s even more positive is that our boys won by not giving up. I knew that we were more than capable of winning, so at 1-1, I told the boys to keep playing the way we’ve been playing.” Hyundai Motor Group

That’s the mentality that matters at a World Cup.

Where Korea Stands Now

With three points, Korea sit second in Group A on goal difference behind Mexico. Czechia are third. South Africa sit at the bottom. Korea’s next Group A match is on June 18 against Mexico in Zapopan. H2news

Mexico next. The host nation’s neighbor. The loudest crowd Korea will face in this tournament.

My Take

As a Korean, this result matters beyond the three points.

This team came back when it was easier to collapse. Down 0-1 in a World Cup group stage match, playing in front of sparse crowds on a weekday morning Korean time — and they found a way.

Son Heung-min. Lee Kang-in. Kim Min-jae. Hwang In-beom. Oh Hyeon-gyu.

This squad has real quality. And if they can back it up against Mexico on June 18, those Korean streets might just fill up again after all.
